Without a Prescription

Azathioprine is prescribed to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis (a condition in which the body attacks its own joints, causing pain and swelling) when other drugs and treatments have not helped. Azathioprine is in a class of medications called immunosuppressants.

Contraindications

Azathioprine is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
- An unusual or allergic reaction to Azathioprine, other drugs, lactose, foods, dyes, or preservatives;
- Breast feeding;
- Infection;
- Kidney disease;
- Liver disease;
- Pregnant or trying to get pregnant;
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Azathioprine or any other medications;

- Tell your doctor if you have any type of infection or if you have or have ever had kidney liver or pancreas disease;

- If you are having surgery including dental surgery tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking Azathioprine;
- Do not have any vaccinations (eg measles or flu shots) during or after your treatment without talking to your doctor;

Interactions

Do not take Azathioprine with any of the following drugs:
- Allopurinol;
- Aminosalicylates like sulfasalazine, mesalamine, balsalazide, and olsalazine;
- Drugs called ACE inhibitors like benazepril, captopril, enalapril, fosinopril, quinapril, lisinopril, ramipril, and trandolapril;
- Leflunomide;
- Mercaptopurine;
- Mycophenolate;
- Sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim;
- Vaccines;
- Warfarin;

Side Effects

Azathioprine side effects that you should report to your health care professional or doctor as soon as possible:
- Yellowing of the eyes or skin;
- Vomiting;
- Unusually weak or tired;
- Unusual bleeding, bruising;
- Severe stomach pain;
- Nausea;
- Hair loss;
- Fever, chills, or any other sign of infection;
- Allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue;
