Clonidine is prescribed for high blood pressure. It is effective when prescribed alone or with other high blood pressure medications.
Clonidine is prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure.
Clonidine is usually only prescribed as an additional treatment for people whose blood pressure has not been lowered sufficiently with other drugs.
Clonidine tablets contain the active ingredient clonidine hydrochloride, which is a type of drug called a centrally-acting antihypertensive. It is prescribed to lower high blood pressure.
Clonidine works by stimulating alpha receptors in the brain. This action reduces the nerve signals that are sent from the brain to the blood vessels causing them to contract and narrow. As a result, the blood vessels are allowed to relax and widen. This increases the amount of space in the blood vessels and so decreases the pressure inside them. This lowers blood pressure.
Doctors prescribe Clonidine for alcohol, nicotine, or benzodiazepine (tranquilizer) withdrawal migraine headaches smoking cessation programs; Tourette's syndrome (tics and uncontrollable utterances); narcotic/methadone detoxification; premenstrual tension; and diabetic diarrhea.

Dosage

CHILDREN

Safety and effectiveness of the Clonidine tablets and patch in children below the age of 12 have not been established.

ADULTS

The dosage will be adjusted to your individual needs.
The regular dose of Clonidine is determined by increasing the daily dose by 0.1 mg at weekly intervals until the desired response is achieved.
The usual starting dose is 0.1 mg, twice a day (usually in the morning and at bedtime).
A larger portion of the increased dose can be taken at bedtime to reduce potential side effects of drowsiness and dry mouth that may appear when you begin taking Clonidine.

The maximum effective dose is 2.4 mg per day; however, this dose is not usually indicated.
The most common effective dosages range from 0.2 mg to 0.6 mg per day divided into smaller doses.

Transdermal Patch

People who are using another high blood pressure medication should not stop taking it abruptly when they begin using the patch, because the medication in the patch may take a few days to begin working.
The patch comes in different strengths, and your doctor will determine which is best for you based on your blood pressure response.
The other medication should be discontinued slowly as the patch begins to take effect.

OLDER ADULTS

Dosages are generally as above; however, the initial dosage for an older person may be lower than the regular starting dose.
